2024 MQ Gathering
A Multi-disciplinary Exploration of the Complexities of Retirement
The concept of retirement has been undergoing a metamorphosis for several decades. Demographic, societal, and workplace trends have all converged to offer a stage of life that is much more fluid and flexible than what most of us previously imagined. In fact, retirement has become a matter of personal definition.
With increased longevity, not only are concepts of old age changing, but individuals are increasingly rejecting the notion that retirement is synonymous with leisure. That’s because retirement for Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials, has come to mean emancipation — freedom to do the kind of work (paid or unpaid) they find most meaningful.
Although all three generations expressed a positive vision of retirement, they also communicated concerns related to financial security and declining health. Even though a majority of the respondents expect to extend their work lives beyond age 65, few are adequately preparing by focusing on their health and keeping their job skills up-to-date. In addition, large percentages of respondents reported “never” or “very infrequently” discussing retirement, and those who have reached retirement are often surprised by the overwhelming emotions that come with a change in self-identity and letting go of past roles.
Despite the major shifts in perspectives and trends in retirement, the financial industry and ways in which advisors work with their clients around planning for retirement have been slow to evolve. Social security and workplace-provided benefits offer far less to retirees than they previously did, and individuals are expected to be responsible for much more of their own saving and investing needs. In addition, most advisors speak to their clients about retirement solely as a “financial goal” and their analysis software programs calculate for a specific retirement date.
At this year’s MQ Gathering, we will take a multidisciplinary look at the complexities of retirement to better understand the human experience. We will also explore the ways in which the industry, financial planning practices, and financial advisors themselves need to evolve to better serve clients and help them experience more joy and fulfillment during their retirement years.
Come join us for this informative and interactive conference on October 28-30, 2024 in Brentwood, TN (10 miles outside of Nashville). In addition, we will also have the opportunity to celebrate Carol Anderson, founder of Money Quotient, and her life’s work as she transitions into her own retirement.
MQ would like to thank CAPTRUST for allowing us the use of their facilities!
